washington post"'s ezra klein and yahoo! finance senior columnist mike santoli. mike, the post-crisis lows for the markets are nearly four years old. in 2013 what's your outlook for the market stability and the broader economy? >> i think the market is finally realizing that it's kind of emerged from this long-term kind of uncertainty trade out there. the big picture questions are whether the central banks can kind of stabilize the system, whether, for example, china last year was going to go into a recession, whether europe can kind of keep it together through recession. i think we've gotten past -- through most of those things and i think it's slow and steady. the u.s. economic growth picture is probably the best bet, but i think it's going to feel better to the average person because of the component to that growth, meaning housing, autos, and finally jobs. looking like they're going into a decent upspring. i think it's slow and steady but feeling better than the past couple of years. >> it definitely does feel better. ezra, uncertainty seems to have been the theme this year. busin

our board meeting in the memory of mike nevin, who recently left us. mike was one of our founding board members way back when we created the transbay joint powers authority and was very supportive over the years. he served as our first chairperson and was there with us in the initial years of moving the project forward. mike was a member of the caltrain board of directors and also a former san mateo county supervisor, mayor of daly city and san francisco police inspector and not only served on our board, but numerous other regional transportation boards and we'll always be appreciative to mike for all of his work in the area of transportation, as well as his commitment for those in need. we extend our sympathies to mike and his family. i would also like to thank director reiskin, because a few board meetings ago director reiskin suspected that suggested that we look into that and found it's viable and could save us money and we modeled after the department of public works and caltrans regulations, allowing for savings during the bid submission and bidders will be encouraged to sub

from capitol hill, nbc white house correspondent mike viqueira. what's going on right now? >> reporter: furs of all house republican aides will tell you there's nothing to vote on. in that they would be entirely correct. we've been talking about the parameters of the deal and you have correctly outlined them as far as i understand them in terms of the income levels and the alternative minimum tax, the extension of unemployment benefit insurance and odd and ends of things that are important to the business community. some text breaks that are extended every year. tax breaks left over from the stimulus. there's a lot there for people to be happy about. the trouble is there's a little bit too much for people to be unhappy about. you remember the sequester, this term we've been throwing around washington now for about a year and a half. it was the result of that debt budget deal, that ceiling rise in july of 2011. they said if there was no deal to significantly reduce government spending by this time, midnight tonight, then there would be this draconian and indiscriminate cut

mike emanuel is live at the capitol following all of the bouncing balls. hey, mike. >> reporter: one concern for republicans as they look at this deal is what about spending cuts? where are the spending cuts? it sounds like they are getting close in the talks between vice president joe biden and the senate republican leader mitch mcconnell but there is not a deal until senator mcconnell knows he has enough support. let's take a look at some of the key points of a framework of the deal according to sources close to the talks. it would raise taxes on income tax amounts above $400,000 for individuals, $450,000 for families. it would address the estate tax, the alternative minimum tax, the medicare doc fix and unemployment insurance. current discussions about how best to address the automatic spending cuts that is called sequestration, the automatic cuts to defense, and domestic programs. a short time ago a leading republican expressed a great deal of concern and frustration with the whole process. >> it's december the 31st. january 1st is tomorrow, 2013, taxes go up. everybody agrees it
